Implications on Classroom Environment and Implementation of iPads
Schools are going away from the traditional pencil, pen and hardback book and transitioning to the digital backpack and one of the current trends is the use of iPads in the classroom setting. iPads are a wonderful tool that can enhance the learning environment but this is only if they are implemented properly. Some tips for teachers implementing iPads into their classroom are:
- Preparation- making sure they are properly trained before implementing the iPads.
- Storage- having a safe and secure storage space for the expensive iPads.
- Safety and Responsibility- making sure to implement safety training and responsibility training for students.
- Utilizing Social Media- to help engage students.
Ethical Implications
With this new digital age in the classroom, it is important that teachers keep a good ethical standard in the classroom. Some potential downfalls are financial cost, replacing the lesson plan for the iPad, Students inappropriate behavior and tunnel vision. The iPads are costly and not all schools can afford an entire set for each classroom. It is important to make sure to not deny a subject iPads because it is not in their budget, that hurts the students in the end. Teachers can use the iPad as a babysitter rather than an aid / tool in the lesson. Students need to be taught cyber safety to make sure that they are utilizing the iPads appropriately. Finally, according to Edudemic.com, "teachers often make the mistake by being focused on subject specific apps and overlook the full range of apps that can be utilized in their classrooms.” It is important to not put the potential of the iPad in your subject content box.

Evolution of iPad
The iPad is becoming one of the most utilized technologies in the classroom. In 2013, 47.000 iPads were sold in the classroom in the first 45 days of sales.(mdgadvertising.com) The iPad was introduced in 2010 and in 3 months the iPad sales reached 1million. According to US News (2011) "With most schools back in session, students in about 600 districts nationwide will return with a new piece of tech: their own personal Apple iPad.”These sales have more than not sky rocketed and have increased since the implementation of technology has grown.
In 2013 Pearson did a survey that looked at the use and appeal of students mobil device utilization in the classroom. This survey supports the concept of a digital back pack and 87% said that they would utilize the iBooks textbook rather than a paper textbook simply due to the weight difference. (The Journal.com) Not to mention the awesomeness of the iBook textbooks! This study showed that students mostly want mobile devices to automate tasks that they already currently do, such as research and homework. Apple is in competition with other companies for tablet sales, but I believe that they continue to stay current, relevant and give benefits to schools for utilization. they will remain on top in the tablet sales in schools.
