I think that it is our jobs as educators to be, just as believers, light in our students lives. We have the potential to be a catalyst in their lives and to have a huge impact on them. I really liked Alan November’s talk on legacy because it really reminded me on the impact I can have in my students lives. I want to be a teacher who focuses on the student as a whole. My job is not only to teach them the content but to give them tool and tips to succeed in this society. I am hoping that I will be able to be a support system for them and to really honestly show that I care more than how well they did on a test. I feel that we, as educators can sometimes be the only role models in our students lives and we should take that role very seriously, you never know what it could mean for their future!
Cyber bullying has really become a huge problem in the past few years and I think it is a very important topic not only to discuss with students but faculty as well. This infographic gives some alarming statistics, effective ways of anti-bullying and really shows the severity of this problem. I think that having this in my classroom can be a great resources for my students so that they can really understand the effect that cyber bullying has on our nation. I also think it should be in the staff lounge as well because it is a great reminder of the problem and will prevent educations from forgetting about the severity of the problem. I really like this infographic and think it would be a really great resource to use in my classroom!
Five Ways to Rejuvenate Yourself and Stay Energized During the School Year The purpose of this Podcast was to talk about ways to stay fresh during the school year. One thing that was really talked about is really taking care of yourself physically. Maintaining physically fit so you have enough energy to continue the lesson for the rest of the day. Professional rejuvenation is a thing to remember besides just personal rejuvenation. Its important to maintain mental stimulation so that you do not simply get tired or disengaged teaching.(William Chamberlain) They discussed TED clubs where students can sign up and the program teaches students how to give 4 minutes TED talks. Its important not to let the professional part overtake our lives because it will effect our teaching.
This was my first time listening to a Podcast! I liked the experience but I am more of a visual learner and sometimes can not maintain focus simply listening. However, the time was only 10 minutes so I was able to maintain my attention. I really enjoyed the RSAnimate animation we did the first week because it had visuals along with a message. I think that the Podcast had some really good points and it gave insightful information for maintaining energy during the school year. Overall, it was a cool experience and I can see how Podcasts are popular because they are easy to listen to and convenient. http://www.bamradionetwork.com/edchat-radio/2587-five-ways-to-rejuvenateyourself-and-stay-energized-during-the-school-year Detecting Lies and Harmful LinksFrom the 10 lesson plans that were available for the digital citizenship, I chose the second lesson titled detecting lies and harmful links. The reason why I chose this lesson is I feel that students need to be more cautious with their online presence and I think it is important to assist them in determining which videos and sites are safe, as well as creditable. Students will do a lot of research in science and there is no regulation for people putting things on the internet or creating a website. So it is my job as an educator to help students steer away from false and potentially computer harming websites. This is especially important when covering lessons such as STD's or the Body Systems. There can be a LOT of damaging images and websites that students can come across so it is important to make sure that they are protected as possible. I like how the lesson begins with going over some basic tools
I also like how it incorporates videos, which will help retain the students attention. Overall, I really like the lesson plan and can see how I can easily incorporate it into my classroom in the future! Materials Needed:
Twitter Experience
EdChat The education chat that I joined was #PiChat This was my first time participating in a edchat and I simply played the roll of observer or as we put it in class last week, lurked. The chat was held on June 24th at 2pm and the topic was on Educator Pain Points. I found this topic to be very interesting because I wanted to hear concerns from other educators and their feelings about "Pain" in education. I used tweetdeck to watch the feed of the chat and the chat was held in tweetchat. This site was very user friendly and it was easy to figure everything out. Even though the two main speakers were higher ed, I thought that they brought information that is useful in the lower educations as well. I thought the questions that they discussed were thought provoking and it was interesting to get everyones opinions of what they believe. It was interesting because during the chat there was also a live Google + video to go along with it. I wasn't expecting this so it made it even more interesting because I thought it was going to simply be just the tweets. Overall, I liked the edchat and thought that it was a fun experience. PintrestMy personal pintrest has a lot of different boards, from food to home, to wedding and fitness. I enjoy researching all of these areas and these are what really interest me. I recently added a teaching board that I plan to use as a resource site, especially with lesson ideas and classroom management. I also a really interested in using MI in the classroom so I use pintrest to find MI ideas. I also follow one of my fellow master teachers because she pins great resources. Pinterest offers visual representations of concepts and as a partial visual learner it makes it easier for me to find resources that can help me. Thoughts on Sir Ken's
I really likes his thoughts on ADHD medication and on how we have a standard structure for education. I truly believe that we are medicating children sometimes as an excuse. That does not mean that some children do not need it but rather than thinking of other types of attention grabbing ideas, we tell them to sit and be quiet. I think that it is important to focus on the individual and not try to conform them to the normal "structure" of a student. Yes we do need to have some rules and procedures laid out but I think with this generation we need to utilize multiple intelligence and integration of technology. These students are able to multitask in so many ways so in order to keep their engagement we need to utilize the products that are maintaining their attention. With the concept of having education be an assembly line, I can see where he is right. What would be interesting is holding a study where timing of classes were different and students would go to classes that they needed extra assistance in the morning. I know when I was teaching in the middle school setting, that students would be checked out after lunch and just counting down the minutes until they could leave. What would be interesting is if they were able to do their favorite subject during that time. This could help with retention and students would end their school day on a positive note.
I really enjoyed the RSA animation! I thought it was a great visual representative of what Ken's was saying and for a visual learner it was a great additional resource. To be honest if I would have simply listened to his presentation I most likely would have checked out but RSA used comedic drawings and highlighted important words that helped with focusing my attention of what the discussion was about. I think that this would be a great tool to utilize in my classroom and I hope that they do other videos as well! |
